Take her to stand on the Pont des Arts, close to the Louvre and wait for the sunset. The bridge is a wooden-decked pedestrian walkway, often the scene of impromptu art exhibitions and buskers, but the view is the big attraction. The Louvre, the Tuileries, the Palais des Arts, and in the distance, the towers of Notre Dame, the Pont Neuf and countless beautiful historic buildings reflected in the river, no wonder the great architect Pugin described it as a view ‘not to be excelled… in any city in Europe.’
Spend an hour sailing model boats in the Tuileries Gardens, on the little boating pond. Not just for children, the little boats can be hired from a cart nearby, and if you’re lucky enough to be staying at the fabulous Paris hotel Le Meurice, they have their own. Surrounded by lovely gardens, even in winter this is a scene worthy of a romantic film, and you can make sure she stars in it.
Tucked away on the rue Montfaucon, in the Saint-Germain district, which is full of charming little Parisian hotels, is Huiterie Regis, a tiny little restaurant that serves only one thing – oysters. There are only ten or so tables, but it’s the prettiest little hideaway you could want, and as they say, oysters are the food of love. Treat her to half a dozen and a glass of something special and she’ll be enchanted.
A rather more flamboyant gesture would be to treat her to tea at the Ritz. A distinct step up, even from the UK Ritz, the Paris hotel, situated on the Place de la Concorde, is a place where centuries of film stars and royalty have shared the most glamorous afternoon tea in town, so you’ll be in good company.
If you’re lucky enough to have secured one of the best hotel deals in Paris, you may not want to leave your room for long. Why not pop in to Pierre Herme, in rue Bonaparte, and pick up a selection of the best macaroons in the world. Choose from a magnificent selection of these tantalising treats, and take them back to eat in bed.
Scent her bathroom at your hotel in Paris with a candle from the elegant Diptyque. Find it at Boulevard St Germain, and she’ll marvel at your ingenuity.
Take her dancing on the banks of the Seine. Every evening from May to September when the weather is fine, the garden of the Square Tino Rossi in the 5th arondissement close to lots of lovely restaurants and bars, is transformed into a free, open-air dance floor. Newcomers are welcome to try a few steps of tango, salsa or rock, from 7pm in this magical setting right on the banks of the Seine. Later, tango aficionados from the French capital and beyond join in and the dance goes on until midnight.
At some point before you have to check out of your hotel in Paris and go home, make time to drop in at Pozzetto (Rue du Roi de Sicile) or Berthillon (Rue St Louis en l’ile) and buy her a perfect ice cream, and she will love you forever. As many a film star has said to her lover, «We’ll always have Paris»
